Synopsis:
Queenie Jenkins can't cut a break. Well, apart from the one from her long term boyfriend, Tom. That's definitely just a break though. Definitely not a break up. Then there's her boss who doesn't seem to see her and her Caribbean family who don't seem to listen (if it's not Jesus or water rates, they're not interested). She's trying to fit in two worlds that don't really understand her. It's no wonder she's struggling.
She was named to be queen of everything. So why is she finding it so hard to rule her own life?
"Turns out the sadness that silence from the person you love brings can be temporarily erased by the dull thrill of attention from strangers."
Review:
Queenie has been one of the books that nearly a lot of readers have heard about and it has been very hyped since before publishing date. I want to start this review by saying that Queenie definitely is worth the hype and deserves even more.
Queenie has showed me how hard life could get no matter what age you are. One minute, you could have your life together; have a stable job, a boyfriend, multiple best friends, but never take anything for granted. One day, you could wake up and your life could be crashing down all around you. Life gets much more difficult with everything that is happening all around us such as police brutality and many other issues, such as discrimination. Queenie is a set example of discrimination. Even in 21st Century, discrimination is a big part of our lives and this needs to change.
This book has caused me to re-evaluate many aspects of my life. How I look at myself, what I do when times get tough, who to appreciate in my life and how wrong I have been treated and allowed myself to be treated just for the sake of some attention. I am learning. Just like Queenie, I am learning. Every day is a bright, new day with endless opportunities.
"'Being brave isn't the same as being okay,' my mum said quietly"
I am going to end my review by adding that I have never read more wholesome novel in my life before. I wish I could delete my memories of reading this book to be able to read it for the first time again. Queenie is definitely the book of 2019 and forever will be one of my favourite books ever written.
